When Life Disrupts Your Holy Habits

When Life Disrupts Your Holy Habits

Most of us are creatures of habit, and it's those daily habits we find comforting, that let us move through our days on autopilot. That includes what I call holy habits that keep us connected to and focused on the Lord--such as our daily Bible reading, praying through our prayer list, keeping our journal.

But when school is out, vacations are underway, or summer projects take over our free time, we can easily be throw off track, falling away from those habits that seem to keep us spiritually on course. How can we manage a close walk in such a season?

First, relax and remember that God knows your schedule and pressures better than you do. He understands disruptions to routine. He is not likely thinking, put me out of your life until things calm down, but rather, let Me help you find ways to stay close to Me so I can help get you through.

Tandem Prayer resources can be a big help in this regard. Prayer guides tuck easily into pockets and purses or into your books library on your phone or reading device. They can guide you through Scripture prayers that are already well thought out. You need not complete the entire page, but you can simply pray the first paragraph or let the prayer titles prompt personal prayers. Even one of the prayers a day can help you to focus and reassure you that you aren't drifting away from the Lord.

The Lord knows you love Him, and He will help you find ways to stay close. Keep in mind, He is not the author of confusion, but the God of peace. He will surround you with His peace that is beyond explanation. Rest in it.

Why does journaling mean so much to me?
Why does journaling mean so much to me?

To hear Him speak, our spirits must be in tune with His voice because He doesn’t usually speak audibly. However, He speaks just as clearly through thoughts and that come to mind. That’s why journaling is so important to me. Though God doesn’t speak to me every day, when He does journaling helps me remember what He has said, so that I can respond in writing and keep it for future reference. If I don’t write it down, I won’t remember.
